New system allows trucks to operate in remote locations without drivers

Rolling Meadows, IL, January 23, 2008—Komatsu America’s Peoria Manufacturing Operation in Peoria, IL, will produce 930E-4 electric drive trucks that will be equipped with the FrontRunner® Autonomous Haulage System, an autonomous navigation system that allows the trucks to operate without drivers. Komatsu America’s parent company, Komatsu Ltd. announced that they will supply Rio Tinto with the autonomous trucks for Rio Tinto’s Pilbara iron ore operations in Western Australia. This deal marks the second FrontRunner® autonomous installation using Komatsu's flagship 930E-4 electric drive truck. Komatsu supplied the first fleet to Codelco in Chile.

Trucks equipped with FrontRunner® can navigate a complex mining environment and deliver a 320 short ton payload of overburden and ore without drivers. This kind of autonomous operation can significantly increase productivity at mine operations, particularly at mines where it is difficult to secure sufficient manpower due to remote locations.

"As the manufacturer of the 930E trucks, we are very gratified to see this exciting project come to fruition,” said Dave Grzelak, CEO of Komatsu America Corp. “The deployment of our 930Es with the FrontRunner® system to Rio Tinto demonstrates Komatsu’s capabilities in delivering highly engineered, cutting edge solutions that meet the challenging demands of our mining customers around the world.”

The 930E is the flagship of Komatsu’s off-highway mining truck product line. The truck combines a 2,700 horsepower engine with an advanced AC electric drive system to move its 1.1 million pound GVW up to 40MPH. The truck is designed and built in the U.S. by Komatsu’s Peoria Manufacturing Operation which manufactures off-highway mining trucks ranging from 100 to 320 short ton capacity.
