Innovative Dozer Design

Komatsu’s super slant nose dozer design is revolutionary. By moving the coolers and cooling fan to the rear of the machine and moving the operator forward accomplished two important things; 1.) The operator has an unobstructed view to the top of his blade and, 2.) balance is improved to the point where it becomes an incredible grading tractor. In 2008 when the first model of this design was introduced, it was entered in Business Week’s International Design competition. It was awarded second place behind the Apple i-Phone. Not bad company. Take the design a step further, and marry it up with a blade control system and you have a very accurate, high speed grading system. See the D37, D39, D51 and D61 dozers for more information.

Hydrostatic Drive and Steering

Hydrostatic drive and steering in small and mid-size bulldozers, give the operator incredible control over his machine’s movement and speed. With palm control the operator has very smooth and precise directional control. Twenty one speeds are available or, if he prefers, the operator can select three quick change settings. All the technology that goes into hydrostatic drive and steering is designed to do one thing, and that is make the operator better and consequently more productive. Hydrostatic Transmission

Small Komatsu wheel loaders (167 hp. and smaller) utilize a hydrostatic transmission instead of a torque converter and geared transmission. The hydrostatic transmission has the advantages of being lighter, having less wear components, auto shifting, quick response, excellent tractive effort when digging in the pile and when climbing/stockpiling, variable traction control and dynamic braking.

Viscous Dampers

Komatsu cabs are mounted on four viscous dampers. A viscous damper uses a spring and a compressed viscous fluid to act as a shock absorber for the cab. The viscous damper acts to prevent vibration from entering the cab and acting on the operator making Komatsu cabs very quiet. And quiet operating environments help the operator be more productive.

KOMTRAX is Komatsu’s remote equipment monitoring and management system. KOMTRAX gathers critical machine and operation information and provides it in a user-friendly format so that you can make well-informed decisions. KOMTRAX gives you more control of your equipment and better control of your business. KOMTRAX comes standard on all new Komatsu construction and mining machines with complementary manufacturer communications services throughout the entire ownership period.

SmartLoader Logic

Komatsu’s Smartloader Logic acquires data from various sensors in the vehicle and controls the engine to yield enough torque for each work phase. Engine torque requirements for a wheel loader vary depending on working conditions. For example, the loader requires higher torque for digging in V-shape loading, but less torque when travelling with an empty bucket. This technology adjusts the engine torque during demanding work, therefore saving fuel. Komatsu SmartLoader Logic functions automatically and doesn’t interfere with operation, saving fuel without decreasing production. Check out the WA380, WA470 and WA500.


Eco-Guidance

Eco-Guidance provides information on the monitor to help save fuel. The monitor displays messages in real-time during operation and on the exit screen when turning the key to shut off the engine. This function can be controlled through the monitor. The operator can view Eco-guide and fuel consumption through the monitor as well as through KOMTRAX.

Komatsu Traction Control System (KTCS)

The Komatsu Traction Control System was designed by Komatsu engineers to allow maximum machine performance in soft ground conditions. Komatsu leveraged its prior experience with traction control systems in bulldozers and rigid trucks to develop this system in articulated trucks.

When operating in soft ground conditions, if the machine detects rapid slowdown in movement it will check to see that the front and middle axle shafts are rotating at the same speed. If they are not, then it will automatically engage the inter axle differential lock to improve machine performance. If the machine then detects wheel slip, it will employ the KTCS. The KTCS system monitors the wheel speed on the front and middle axles and begins to control the wheel speed that slip was detected on. KTCS continually monitors the wheel speed during operation to provide optimal machine performance in soft ground conditions. KTCS is automatically engaged and disengaged. This allows the operator to concentrate on operating the HM300-3 and not worry about using switches or buttons to get maximum performance.

Trailing Arm Suspension

Komatsu articulated trucks feature trailing arm (De Dion) type front suspensions. This type of suspension allows the truck to move more smoothly over rough terrain. An analogy is pulling rather than pushing a wheel barrow. When pulling the wheel barrow, you don’t feel up your arms the shock of the wheel barrow hitting bumps, but you do when you push the wheel barrow.


Lock-up Torque Converter

Lock-up torque converters in Komatsu wheel loaders and bulldozers increase production and lower costs. The lock-up torque converter is designed to go from a fluid coupling to a locked up, direct drive connection between the engine and transmission when a certain ground speed is reached. In lock-up the tractor will gain speed which can increase production and since there is no power loss through the transmission, there will be fuel savings as well.


Dual Mode Transmission

Komatsu motor graders have a unique dual mode transmission that allows the operator to operate in direct drive or torque converter modes. Any grader other than Komatsu utilizes direct drive, which is a direct link between the engine and transmission controlled by a clutch. So in order to slow down or maneuver around an obstacle such as a manhole, the operator needs to use his clutch to control his speed and not stall his engine. Komatsu graders can be operated in direct drive mode, like the competition, but the operator has the advantage of not needing to use the clutch to keep from stalling. In other words, the Komatsu has the performance of direct drive without the worry of stalling the engine. In addition, the Komatsu grader operator can switch his transmission into torque converter mode. Torque converter mode will give the grader excellent pushing power but, more importantly, excellent low speed control of his movement and hydraulics. And, again, the operator can’t stall his engine in torque converter mode. Torque converter mode has definite advantages in fine grading applications and in accelerating operator training. Direct Drive has advantages in long pushes such as snow removal.

Monitor Panel

Tier 4 interim Komatsu machines have 7” color LED monitor screens in the cab. In addition to providing the operator with necessary functional data, the monitor provides on-board system diagnostics. The monitor will warn the operator when any problems arise as well as give him a suggested course of action. An eco-guidance graphic can suggest ways for the operator to operate more efficiently. The operator can also monitor the condition of his Tier 4 system through the screen and with the press of a button he can switch the monitor to the view from his rear camera (trucks and loaders have separate back up screens).

Rear View Cameras

All Tier 4 Komatsu construction machines feature color rear view cameras and in cab screens. The camera is mounted to give a wide view behind the machine. Through the computer, lines can be superimposed on the screen to represent the track of the machine as well as a distance adjustable line representing distance from the rear of the machine. The operator in Komatsu excavators and dozers see their rear view in the monitor. In dozers, the monitor can be programmed to produce the rear view anytime the tractor goes into reverse. Trucks and wheel loaders utilize a dedicated separate screen so the rear view is available at all times

Power Max

Komatsu excavators have a function called Power Max. When the operator presses the Power Max button atop the left joystick, digging force, both arm and bucket, will be increased 7-8% to help power through the toughest digging that will leave competitors machines grunting and stalling.

Komatsu’s total control approach to machine management matches the engine and hydraulics at the most efficient point under any load condition. Improvements in main valves and hydraulic circuits produce reduced hydraulic loss, resulting in higher efficiency and lower fuel consumption.
